"There is a vibration in everything.." are the words Carl uses when explaining our unique marketing strategy. While it may sound like something from a Dennis Hopper movie or a Gary Busey cameo, it dovetails nicely with the mechanics of music and the history of the guitar. Ever since Ogg and Mog the cavemen beat on a stone or howled in unison the vibrations and rhythms in music have been a way to convey thoughts and feelings we couldn't express in any other way.
By the time guitars were being developed in the 17th century, these vibrations were being defined and distilled into the musical theories and structure we recognize as resolute today. French and Italian luthiers were the first to make six string guitars. The modern guitar didn't appear until the late nineteenth century when Antonio de Torres made the most prominent mark in 5,000 years of guitar history. While Torres' work is well known, his history and inspiration are unclear. At A.Davis Guitars this is what we know; Antonio de Torres tapped into a source of culture and knowledge that has eluded all but the greatest thinkers and doers throughout time. He wiped the slate clean and illustrated once and for all how a guitar should look and what it should sound like.
Still, this "standardization" caused by a matrix of events in southern Spain has been but a hiccup in the guitar universe. Get some wood, some strings, maybe some metal bits or a few coils of wire. If it can be done, it has been done and it will be done again. Even with the multitude of guitar variations there is one inclusive factor. That is the vibrations that move the human soul just as they define the sound and beauty of a modern guitar. The vibrations of sound and light or radio waves. The movements of the sun and moon or the vibrations of the molecules and cells we are made from. We could parse these vibrations and define them through mathematics and the vagaries of quantum physics. We could put values on pieces of wood and how they react in the ergonomic and ecological canvas of life. It is just one of our goals. What we prefer is to avoid polluting the dance between man and machine; to simply place the best guitars into the light and witness the beauty of inspiration in our friends, the supporters of the worlds greatest instrument...la guitarra!
